plays - Nantwich Players Theatre - The Witches

There’s a proper carry on taking place in Nantwich this week, writes Claire Faulkner.

‘Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick’, written by Terry Johnson and directed by Michaela Warrilow, is taking the stage by storm at The Players Theatre on Love Lane.

The play centres around the working and personal relationships between stars of the carry on films – Sidney James, Kenneth Williams and Barbara Windsor.

The action takes place in a caravan/dressing room belonging to Sid James on the films sets of Carry on Cleo in 1964 to Carry on Emmanuelle in 1978.

We find Sid as a womanizer and gambler.

Kenneth as a hypochondriac, constantly worried about getting fired and replaced, and who Barbara has her own personal problems, but clearly adores both of her co-stars.

The danger with a play like this is that the production could easily fall into the trap of mimicking the well-known characters instead of giving us a representation of them.

This doesn’t happen. The cast did a remarkable job.

The play is enjoyable, well acted and although sad in places it is also very, very funny.

Rob Lewis gives a wonderful interpretation of ‘Sid’ and Gemma Cutler played a great ‘Barbara’.

There are some superb one-liners, and Jonathan Everitt as ‘Kenneth’ completely stole the show for me. He was brilliant.

Full of innuendoes, with adult humour and strong language, ‘Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick’ runs until October 29 at The Players Theatre in Nantwich.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
