Standing on stage to introduce an evening of poetry to a packed Civic Hall, Nantwich Words and Music Festival organiser Nigel Stonier said “we care about the words”.

This love for language couldn’t have been any better demonstrated by the two poets performing that night, Mike Garry and Dr John Cooper Clarke.

Mike Garry, a poet from Fallowfield, looked completely at home on stage started the show in style.

I don’t think anyone could fail to love listening to his performances, the rhythms in his verses seem to shine through the words.

Garry entertained the audience his performance including, ‘Penny for a Guy’, ‘Son’ and ‘St Anthony (A tribute to Tony Wilson).

Next, the Bard of Salford himself took to the stage.

Iconic in the dark suit, sunglasses and famous haircut, Dr John Cooper Clark recited some of his most well known verse at almost break neck speed.

Insightful and intelligent, funny and brilliant, Cooper Clarke gave us all a night to remember.

Full of comedy and social commentary his performance included old favourites such as ‘Beasley Street’ and ‘Evidently Chickentown’, alongside ‘Bed Blocker Blues’ and ‘I’ve fallen in Love with my Wife’.

A fantastic night out to celebrate the spoken word at the Words and Music Festival.

More of this in next year’s festival please.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
