Nantwich Town captain Sam Hall felt the side’s 1-1 draw against Ashton United was the sort of performance they had expected going into the new season.
Midfielder Hall (pictured) reflected on the away point earned last night (August 16) just three days after the opening day defeat by Mickleover Sports.
The Dabbers needed a big response against promotion hopefuls Ashton.
And Hall says the whole team put in a strong performance, with Steve Jones’ thunderbolt earning the side a valuable point.
Hall said: “Obviously it’s good to chalk up the first point of the season.
“I think the performance was like what we were expecting from the off.
“Saturday was nowhere near the levels we set ourselves.
“So it was good to come and, most of all, play well and get a result where we all feel a bit disappointed we haven’t won the game.
“But a point’s on the board now, so we move on to Matlock on Saturday and then hopefully to carry that on and kick on.
“We collectively all knew it wasn’t quite right on Saturday against Mickleover.
“We all got together and we’ve put it right hopefully. That’s the kind of level we’ve set ourselves and we want to maintain that level for the season moving on.
“Coming to Ashton United is always a tricky fixture, they are a good side and they’ll be up there come the end of the season – they are one of the favourites.
“We should have won the game comfortably.
“We’ve had far more clear cut chances and other than the free kick, I can’t remember Dave (Parton) having a save to make at the other end.
“We’ve got to go on now, win Saturday and start moving up the league.”
Hall also praised goalscorer Jones, the veteran former Northern Ireland and Crewe Alexandra winger.
“That goal is the blessing you’ve got with someone like Steve in your side.
“He hasn’t played where he’s played and done what he’s done without being able to produce moments like that.
“He’s one of those players, he’s a match winner.
“They are the type of players you need if you want to be up there and challenging.
“You need players who are going to score at the vital times and he did that.”
Nantwich travel to Matlock Town this Saturday August 20, kick off 3pm.
