goosander at stapeley grange rspca centre

A young goosander found stuck in a chimney in Manchester is being nursed back to health by Nantwich RSPCA staff.

Workers at RSPCA Stapeley Grange on London Road have been caring for the female diving duck after she was admitted with broken feathers and was underweight.

The saw-billed bird is a popular inpatient as she is just the seventh goosander to be admitted to the centre in more than 20 years.

Manager at RSPCA Stapeley Grange Lee Stewart said: “Goosanders are not a common sight in the streets of Manchester so we are not sure how she managed to get stuck down a chimney.

“These birds are usually seen near freshwater sources like reservoirs and streams.

“This young goosander is an unusual guest at Stapeley, too, as we have only had seven admitted to us in our 21-year history – so she is a rare admission for us.

“This poor bird came in to us on May 15 – she was underweight and with some broken feathers but she is otherwise in good health.

“She is making a good recovery and is now on an outdoor pool.

“We are hoping to release her as soon as she is well and strong enough.”

Meanwhile, police are appealing for information after 14 birds were stolen from an aviary address in Crewe.

The incident happened between 10pm on April 26 and 7am on April 27 at a house on Middlewich Street.

The offender broke in by claiming over the fence at the back from Sherborne Road.

They forced open the door of the aviary and stole 14 birds, including budgies, finches, a canary and quails (pictured, below)

Investigating Officer PC Kris Bache said: “I am keen to speak to anyone who was in the local area around the time this incident occurred and believes they may have seen anything suspicious.”

Anyone with any information should contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 100 of 27/4/2016, report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
