Man of match against Whitby Town Jon Moran, Nantwich Town defender

Nantwich Town slipped to a home defeat in their opening match of 2016.

The Dabbers lost 2-1 against Whitby Town at a rain-soaked Weaver Stadium today (January 2).

More than 340 fans braved the soggy conditions which seemed to affect the hosts more than the visitors.

Whitby adapted well, and put Nantwich under pressure early on, with Dabbers keeper Burzynski called into action several times.

And they took the lead on 16 minutes when Michael Roberts latched onto a long ball that deceived the keeper to tap into en empty net.

Nantwich man of the match Jon Moran (pictured) was forced to clear off the line a few minutes later as Whitby continued to press.

Nantwich did force a few corners without really threatening, and it was the visitors who doubled their advantage on 35 minutes when Ryan Brobbel’s fine shot cannoned in off the bar.

Phil Parkinson’s men gave themselves a chance five minutes after the restart when they earned a penalty.

Steve Jones jinked his way into the area and was brought down.

Elliot Osborne stepped up to fire the spot-kick past Bland in the Whitby goal.

The hosts surged forward in search of a leveller and had several chances.

Liam Shotton, Sean Cooke, Osborne and Matty Kosylo all had efforts on goal as Whitby stood firm.

But it was not to be for the Dabbers who remain in second place in Evo-Stik Premier League, but with teams closing in behind and with games in hand.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
