A Wistaston teenager has teed up a golf scholarship in the USA in a bid to make it big in the sport.
South Cheshire College sports student Lewis George is heading across the Atlantic to the University of Central Arkansas (UCA).
The 18-year-old will study kinesiology while driving forward his golfing talent at the same time.
The Delamere Forest Golf Club member plays off a handicap of two, and is one of just a handful of UK students to be selected for the prestigious scholarship.
Lewis first picked up a club when he was six and lowered his handicap to five by the age of 12 at Crewe Golf Club.
He has won numerous club competitions and this year was honoured to be Cheshire County Boys Captain.
The former Shavington High School pupil also played for England at under 16 level, playing venues including Portmarnock in Ireland and St Andrew’s Castle Course, Scotland.
Lewis said: “This is an amazing opportunity for me and the chance to take my golf and my studies to the next level.
“Golf has always been a way of life for me and I know going to the USA will give me a good chance of making it in the game as a professional because the courses and practice facilities there are first class and there are so many courses to choose from.
“I’ll also be getting to know other people on the scholarship with the same passion for golf as me so will help me to improve my game.
“I went through a rigorous application process to get into the university but I’m delighted to have been accepted on the course and the golf scholarship.”
Lewis will be spending most of his free time practising on Nutters Chapel Golf Club in Conway, Arkansas, which will be his local club.
Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement and can be applied to sport and exercise and physical and occupational therapy.
Lewis said: “I loved the sports course at South Cheshire College and it has played a big part in helping me to secure this scholarship.
“I also gained some coaching skills which I’m hoping to use in the future.
“I’m very grateful to all the tutors at college who have supported me during my college years.”
