co-op pharmacy, high street, nantwich

Pub chain Wetherspoons is looking to open a new pub in Nantwich, it has confirmed.

But bosses denied rumours they are considering the Co-op pharmacy store on High Street as a site.

The pharmacy, now part of the Bestway Group, is set to close in the next few weeks.

JD Wetherspoon, which now has more than 900 pubs across the UK, believes Nantwich is the perfect place for a new outlet.

The company, which has made a success in selling low-price beer and basic pub grub, recently opened in Crewe, called The Gaffers Row.

A company spokesman told Nantwichnews: “We are definitely interested in the town of Nantwich, but we don’t have any specific sites on our radar yet.

“We heard there is talk about the Co-op store on High Street, but this is not the case. We have not looked at this.

“We’ve done well with pubs in other towns in Cheshire not too far away, we like this area and Nantwich is certainly a town we are interested in. But we have no sites in mind at this moment.”

Co-operative pharmacies are being re-launched under a new name, Well, following Bestway Group’s acquisition late last year.

Christian Logue, portfolio and business development director at Well, said its five-year strategy involved a combination of a re-brand, pharmacy relocations, acquisitions, re-fitting, new openings and “occasional branch closures”.

“As part of this plan we have taken the decision to close our pharmacy located at 10-16 High Street, Nantwich,” he added.

“We have spoken to all of our colleagues from the branch about the change and will continue to support them through the consultation process.

“The consultation is still on-going and we are working through the process with colleagues, offering redeployment into alternative roles where possible.

“The final outcome will be determined once this process is complete.”

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

  1. The only thing i have seen weatherspoons is good for is it opens early for the drunks to start drinking early …. Every time i walk past the one in crewe there is always drop outs hanging outside getting leathered early mornings … We dont need this in nantwich

  2. What happened to Nantwich being a home town not a clone town. It’s not like we are short of pubs in the town centre. I’ve nothing against Wetherspoons as such but I just don’t think it’s needed and I don’t like the thought it will cost the independents business, maybe it wont but who can resist cheap drinks!

Shake up eh? Just what we need another pub chain, what is wrong with supporting privately owned pubs? They make Nantwich special.!

    • Clint Westwood says:

It’s called free enterprise Tom, it’s what we should all be supporting apparently.

Sounds like you’re the landlord of one of the town centre pubs and don’t want any more competition.

  4. Gavin Jones says:

Why Not let Wetherspoons build it in the middle of Barony Park or on the edge of Nantwich Lake? All these chains seem to purposely choose locations that will annoy people, whilst we, the locals, get told about the need for business expansion by the local politico’s who whine that they have no power to stop anything, whilst still taking healthy salaries for their impotence.

Perhaps they could close a nursery or an old folks home to make way for friday night cheap alcohol filling, inevitable underage sales, extra policing, followed by fighting, vomiting, visit to A&E and a kebab on the way home.

You wouldn’t put a sign up at the edge of any town saying “This town welcomes binge drinkers – please vomit quietly” yet we will allow the very reason for the nonsense to be brought to our town.

Crewe got hosed, why should everyone else?

    • The easiest way to prevent there being a Wetherspoons is to not use it. If it makes no money then it will close. The one in Whitchurch didn’t last long.

  5. Rebecca Rogerson says:

Are you people being serious. You obviously don’t come from Nantwich and don’t value our town, it will be like going to Crewe and don’t tell me any different. If that offends people then tough, I’m standing up for our Nantwich town, we don’t want a weather spoons in our town.

    • In my experience Wetherspoons pubs have no loud music, no annoying TV screens, an excellent range of drinks and very good prices.

Are you suggesting that yobs are suddenly going to come pouring into Nantwich for a night out simply because it has a Spoons?

  6. Interesting. A Wetherspoons would certainly shake up the other pubs in the town. I’m not sure the Boots site is big enough for them though. Their pubs tend to be pretty large.

    • Susan Beech says:

The Methodist church in Hospital Street is up for sale. Does anyone know if it is large enough?

  7. Susan Beech says:

We need a weather spoons like the Ambiance is similar to the Mare Pool in Mere Green.
