The Overwater Wheelyboat is due to launch on The Shropshire Union Canal this week.

The boat, to operate from the Overwater Marina near Nantwich, will provide free trips to disabled children and adults.

The 17ft boat is specially designed with easy access for people with mobility issues allowing easy roll on/roll off access for wheelchairs.

The launch event will be at the marina on Coole Lane this Saturday June 27.

Rodney Cottrell, chairman of Overwater Wheelyboat Project, will start the launch at 3pm followed by the story of the Wheelyboat Trust by Andy Beadsley, the trust’s director.

Janet Maughan, director of Overwater Marina, will then give the history of the marina followed by the boat’s blessing by the Reverend Helen Chantry.

Angus, Maria, Liz and Hannah Maughan will then formerly christen the boat – The Maughan Lass – in memory of their father, Richard Maughan.

A short trip will be available for invited passengers with entertainment from Cheshire Constabulary Corps of Drums and afternoon tea will be served in our marquee.

Rodney Cottrell said: “Boat trips from the marina are extremely popular but inaccessible for anyone who can’t climb into a boat from the jetty.

“This new boat allows us to take those people on two-hour journeys along a lovely stretch of the canal offering fantastic views and no locks!”

Several local organisations, businesses and individuals have helped fund the new charity by raising more than £30,000 to have the boat built along with its special jetty, required licensing and immediate running costs.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
