Hardy members of a new conservation group gathered for a Nantwich Lake big clean-up.
People leading the new Nantwich Lake Wildlife Conservation Group braved the wind and rain to carry out their first big initiative.
Around 20 people (pictured) gathered at a group meeting in Nantwich days before to organise the event.
And the tidy-up has helped give the paths and greenery around the lake a new lease of life.
They brushed loose gravel from ramps and pathways in the area to prevent swans suffering conditions like bumble foot.
“This is when a lump appears underneath their feet and causes them to limp,” said the group’s leader Caron Hull.
“Usually this will require attention from a vet at RSPCA Stapeley Grange wildlife centre.”
The group also brushed and cleaned areas around picnic benches and surveyed the area where there are plans for a nesting site.
“The area already has a fence around it that is in need of repair so we are looking into possible ways of funding or replacing this,” added Caron.
“We plan to add floating walkways to the specified area as the Crewe group did on the islands in Queens Park last year.
“This proved to be a success as we watched last year’s cygnets use it in January and recently baby moorhens have been seen using the walkways to gain access to the islands.”
