Nantwich Town manager Phil Parkinson has hailed the victory over Whitby as one of the best moments in his managerial career, writes Richard Scott.
Goals from Steve Jones and Ben Harrison sealed all three points for the Dabbers and ensured their safety in the league.
A jubilant Parkinson said: “Without a shadow of a doubt, my managerial career stems at Alsager Town and Nantwich Town.
“Alsager were in a relegation battle it went to the very last game to the last kick of the last minute.
“Thank goodness it hasn’t gone to here.
“The lads have made it so easy for me because they are a great bunch of lads, with loads of ability, if we take more of the chances we create.
“My blood pressure won’t be so high and we will be putting teams to bed a lot earlier.
“But I think everyone here can see we are going in the right direction. We are doing the right things.
“We have a great bunch of lads, the team spirit is fantastic, they are a dream to work with and this club is a dream to work at.
“When I first came in and saw them in training, I said to myself if I can’t keep this team up I think I should hand in my notice to Jon at the end of the season, never mind getting sacked, because this club is too good of a club to be in this position and one thing I have got in the back of my mind is the next two games.
“There is no way we should be where we are. I am not saying we can go from where we are to top in the league – that would be ridiculous.
“But we got to be up there competing.”
For all the chances Nantwich had in the first half, they were unable to score and some criticism was heading Liam Shotton’s way.
Parky defended his forward who was carrying an injury.
He said: “I would like to point out that a few people would have watched Liam Shotton’s performance there.
“I asked him to play on a sprained ankle.
“He could have easily said no and he didn’t. He really tried to get through it.
“He didn’t so I brought him off, but it was a decision I made.
“Mark Winslade come on, did exactly what I wanted him to do he cause them all sorts of problems, maybe I should have started him.
“I will be giving Mark his chance before the end of the season.”
Steve Jones came off the bench to get the equaliser for the Dabbers with nine minutes to go, which turned the tie in the Dabbers favour.
Parkinson hailed Steve Jones’ effort in what is a squad game.
He said: “I went into the dressing room at half time and said it’s not just about the starting 11, it’s about the whole squad, those lads could have come on and sulked.
“They haven’t because they know I won’t tolerate that for one and they are all pulling in the same direction.
“They know I don’t have favourites if you are playing well you will start, If you are in a winning 11 you will start. That how it’s got to be.
“You can’t just play people for the namesake or how much money they earn because it leaves a bad taste in players mouths.”
