Nantwich Town have lodged a complaint to police alleging one of their players was assaulted at the end of the Matlock Town game.

The club has made the complaint to police, the Evo-Stik League and the FA, and says it has supported it with photographic evidence.

The alleged assault led to a melee involving players from both sides at the end of the match on Saturday (February 28) which Matlock with 2-1.

Some fans tweeted after the match that the incident involved an alleged ‘bite’.

In a statement, the Weaver Stadium club said: “Following the conclusion of our away game at Matlock on Saturday 28th February, an extraordinary incident took place, whereby it is alleged one of our players was assaulted, resulting in an unfortunate and regrettable melee involving players from both sides.

“Nantwich Town Football Club has lodged a formal complaint with the Evo-Stik League and the FA supported by photographic evidence, along with a formal complaint to the Police.

“We will cooperate fully with any further investigations that may arise from this in the near future, as we owe it to our management team, players and supporters to protect our integrity and proud record as previous winners of the FA’s national RESPECT campaign of upholding the highest standards of discipline and behaviour.

“Due to the sensitivity of this issue and ongoing investigation, Nantwich Town can make no further comment at this time.”
