John Bowler, chairman of Crewe Alex FC

Tributes have poured in for Crewe Alexandra chairman John Bowler from players, staff and fans after he was awarded the MBE.

John, from Nantwich, on the board of directors at Crewe Alexandra since 1980, was named in the 2015 New Year Honours list.

He succeeded the late Norman Rowlinson as chairman in 1988.

The former Football Association and Football League director was recently awarded with the Football League’s Contribution to The League award at the 2014 award ceremony in London.

He was also honoured with the League Managers Association Special Merit Award in May 2013.

In August 2003, Mr Bowler and then manager Dario Gradi were admitted to the Roll of Honorary Freemen of the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich – the highest honour a council can bestow.

Dario was also awarded the MBE in 1998 for his services to sport.

A spokesman for Crewe Alex said today: “Everyone at Crewe Alexandra Football Club would like to congratulate John on his latest and deserved esteemed honour.”

Former Crewe Alex favourite Dean Ashton tweeted: “Congratulations to @crewealexfc chairman John Bowler on his MBE. Years of fantastic service to football and a thoroughly nice guy.”

And a spokesman for the Football League added: “Congratulations to long serving @crewealexfc chairman John Bowler who has been awarded an MBE. Well done John.”

Port Vale owner Norman Smurthwaite said: “Congratulations to John Bowler, chairman of @crewealexfc on being awarded a MBE in the New Year Honours List.”

Other supporters added their delight, calling John a “true gent” and a “well deserved” for his “services to the community”.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
