Oklahoma, by Acton Amateur Operatic Society

Acton Amateur Operatic Society will be performing a five-day stint of their new production “Oklahoma” in Stoke-on-Trent.

The shows will run at the Mitchell Arts Centre in Hanley between October 7 and 11.

Evening shows start at 7.30pm, and a matinee special on Saturday will begin at 2.30pm.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma is set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century and tells the story of a relationship of local cowboy and farm girl.

Saddle-sore members of the operatic society have been busy in other ways preparing for the show.

A month ago, members completed a 50-mile bike ride raise funds for the performance.

Volunteers pedalled from Acton Parish Hall to Mitchell Arts Centre and back (pictured).

Long-serving member Debbie Cornock, making her debut as director, led the team of eight cyclists who raised more than £1,000.

In previous years, AOS has staged its shows at the Lyceum Theatre in Crewe.

But financial restraints meant they have been forced to find an alternative venue.

Acton Operatics Society spokesman Gareth Roberts said: “Fundraising events to assist with the cost of putting on shows regularly take place, so for members to get involved with this bike ride proves how enthusiastic they are for the show to be a success!”

Anyone able to support the group can donate using paypal via their website www.acton-aos.co.uk

Ticket prices are £15, available on 01782 409307, or online at www.mitchellartscentre.co.uk

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
