A duck race at a marina near Nantwich has helped raise more than £2,500 for St Luke’s (Cheshire) Hospice.

Aqueduct Marina, at Church Minshull, sold more than 1,000 ducks at £2.50 each for the event.

And huge crowds turned out to watch the race in glorious weather.

Clare Dale, events fundraiser for St Luke’s Hospice, said: “We have received plenty of positive comments about the day and raised in excess of £2,500 for our very special hospice.

“Everyone was a huge help and made us very welcome on the day. A special thank you goes to the person who ordered the sun!”

The race started when the ducks were tipped into the canal turning it into a sea of yellow.

They drifted eastwards along the canal with boats going past at 4mph!

The finish line was about 100 yards away and 30 minutes later there was almost a sprint finish.

A huge crowd of duck sponsors cheered them on, but first place went to no. 781 – sponsored by Michelle Hallett

Marina director Robert Parton said: “Thank you to St Luke’s for organising everything, to the people who bought ducks and the many people who turned up to watch on what was a beautifully hot sunny day.”

All money raised at events by the marina in 2014 will go to its chosen charities, including Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
