Nantwich-based The Cat radio has won the race to a new community radio Ofcom licence, it was announced today

The station, based at Frederick House on Beam Heath Way, will now broadcast on the airwaves for five years across Nantwich, Crewe and surrounding villages.

It ends a battle between The Cat and Crewe-based rivals Redshift Radio for the one available community licence in South Cheshire.

The licences are being offered by Ofcom on a region by region basis.

An Ofcom spokesman said community radio services are designed to be not-for-profit,  focusing on delivery of specific social benefits to a particular geographical community or a community of interest.

In its ruling, Ofcom said The Cat had put together a “viable business plan for a low-cost financial model which appears sustainable”.

It also praised the proposed programme output “based on the group’s internet broadcasting experience” which should cater for the tastes and interests of the local community.

The Cat also presented good training proposals and the resources and experience to deliver them.

It said The Cat also benefits from support from local organisations and individuals, and “demonstrated strong community involvement”.

Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries.

It covers television, radio, telecommunications, wireless communications and postal services.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
