Motorists faced long delays after a lorry crashed and overturned at junction 16 of the M6.
The northbound carriageway was closed, and the southbound left heavily congested after the accident at the Nantwich turn-off.
It sparked long delays on the A500 and surrounding roads and drivers looked for alternative routes.
Another accident during peak hour evening traffic on the roundabout linking the A500 Shavington bypass with the single carriageway A500 to the M6 added to the problems.
There were long delays for drivers heading away from Nantwich and Crewe towards the motorway.
