Nantwich Foodbank has fed more than 620 people in just six months – including nearly 300 children.
The startling figures were revealed by organisers of the foodbank, run by the Trussell Trust.
Jane Emery unveiled the latest statistics during a talk at a recent business event in Stapeley, Nantwich.
And she called on more support from organisations and companies in the area.
“Based on Foodbanks in other towns, we thought we might around 300 people in the first six months,” said Jane.
“Now we are well over 600. There is a real need for this service, even in a town like Nantwich.”
The service works on a referral system, with those in need referred by GPs, counsellors and others in authority.
Most referrals are because of debts, low incomes, a delay in benefits or a change in someone’s benefits.
“Food is donated by the general public and we have collection days from supermarkets,” added Jane.
“All food is weighed and stored, and accounts set up properly.
“All our volunteers are trained, and the service also helps to give people time, to listen, and to refer on to other help where needed.”
Food donations can be made at David Lago, on Beam Heath Way, Nantwich (Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm), St Marys Church, Nantwich (Monday to Saturday 9am – 4pm), Market Street Baptist Church, Nantwich (Saturday 9am – 12 noon) and Elim Church, Regents Park, Nantwich (Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm).
