Drivers in Nantwich and Crewe are warned to avoid the A500 and M6 junction 16 after a fire involving a lorry carrying cooking oil.
The heavy goods vehicle overturned on the northbound sliproad at junction 16.
The crash caused 25 tonnes of used cooking oil to spill onto the slip road and the vehicle set on fire.
Fire crews from across Cheshire and Staffordshire were called out, and they used 1,200 litres of foam to extinguish the flames and specialist equipment to contain the oil, foam and water mixture from the incident.
This prevented the liquid from entering drains and nearby fields.
The driver of the lorry was taken to North Staffordshire Hospital by paramedics as a result of this incident which happened at about 6am today (July 10).
Fire bosses say the sliproad will remain closed for most of the day while the liquid is removed and the vehicle is recovered and removed.
Environment Agency staff, Cheshire Police and Highways Agency staff are at the scene.
Traffic has tailed back from the junction back along the A500 to Crewe Hall, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
