Nantwich families are being urged to take care with candles after a fire at a house in Crewe.

Firefighters believe the blaze, which left one person injured, was caused by “careless use” of candles.

It started in a first floor bedroom and crews had to wear breathing apparatus used to get inside and tackle the flames.

The bedroom and first floor were badly damaged at the property on Laura Street.

The occupant was treated at the scene.

Crewe station manager Paul Binyon said: “This incident serves as a stark reminder that candles can be extremely dangerous and threaten life and property if not used with care.”

Homeowners should put candles on a heat-resistant surface and be especially careful with night lights and tea lights, do not place on tops of televisions, leave at least 10cms between any two candles, and don’t put candles near curtains, fabrics or furniture and keep them out of draughts.

They should also site them out of the reach of children and away from pets, keep clothes and hair away from the naked flame, and don’t leave candles burning before going to sleep.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
