A surge in molehills has created a mountain of work for one Nantwich business.
Family-run pest control firm Suddenstrike has been flooded with calls from householders plagued by moles.
One of the wettest summers on record has seen a big rise in the creatures in gardens across Cheshire.
Now the firm, based on Welshman’s Lane, has recruited a new mole-catcher to help tackle the garden pest.
Steve Wilkinson, who runs the business with his son James and daughter Emily, said: “Moles cause utter devastation in gardens and farmer’s fields and as we head to harvest time, we know things are going to get even busier.
“They love moisture and fresh soil. Newly-laid lawns are paradise to them. They may look cute but it’s no joke finding a garden, lovingly well-tended, covered in molehills.
“Heavy rainfall brings worms to the surface, presenting a plentiful food source so it’s been a field day for moles this summer. With more than 20 mole-related calls a week we needed to extend our workforce to handle the demand.”
Moles can speed along at up to six miles an hour underground, and wreak havoc on farmland bychurning up and destroying crops.
Suddenstrike’s workforce of pest control technicians has doubled to 11 to deal with new contracts, including football clubs, airports and schools.
Last year the firm, members of the Guild of British Molecatchers, covered 25,000 acres of land undertaking mole control in gardens, farms, commercial premises and parks.
