Nominations for the new powerful £75,000-a-year Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner position are now open.
The post-holder, elected on November 15, will be in charge of holding Cheshire Constabulary to account for the way it polices Nantwich and other towns.
The Commissioner role is designed to take over from the current Police Authority system.
He or she will scrutinise the way policing is deliveredin terms of effectiveness and efficiency, and will set the police budget and policing element of council tax.
Margaret Ollerenshaw (pictured), current chairman of Cheshire Police Authority, said: “It is a good time for people to give some thought to this next big election.
“The Commissioner will play a vital and wide-ranging role in the future of policing and in other parts of the criminal justice system.
“People need to understand what the role involves and have ideas about what sort of approach they would like to see their Commissioner take.”
Candidates have until October 19 to declare their intention to stand. The main political parties are likely to select candidates in June or early July.
Voting will take place across the county on November 15.
