Nantwich Police are using four legs in their battle against drugs in the town.
They patrolled the pubs and clubs of Nantwich with a “passive” drugs dog to find suspected offenders.
Use of the dog is part of an operation to reduce public disorder in the town centre in 2012.
The dog works with its handler and indicates a potential drugs presence as it walks past revellers.
And on its first use on Saturday night (March 3), it resulted in nine people admitting to being in possession of drugs or having been in proximity to people taking drugs.
Insp Dave Smithers, head of Nantwich Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “The idea of using the dog was two-fold.
“We wanted to identify any persons in possession of controlled drugs within the town centre and also to send out a crime prevention message that our team has another valuable tool in the fight against crime and disorder.
“The use of the dog was very favourably received by the public, licensees and door staff and we will use this approach again in Nantwich soon.”
The nine people caught were issued with ‘voluntary attendance’ orders to attend a police interview. If they fail to attend, they face arrest and possible charges.
