Nantwich Town’s new signing Lee Steele has been charged with bringing the game into disrepute over comments made on Twitter.

The FA charge relates to a comment about gay rugby star Gareth Thomas.

The 38-year-old striker was sacked by Oxford City over the comments before Jimmy Quinn snapped him up for the Dabbers.

The club issues an apology on Steele’s behalf before he lined up to make his Weaver Stadium debut on Saturday in the 2-2 draw with Hednesford.

Steele’s January 5 Twitter post, in relation to Mr Thomas’ appearance on Celebrity Big Brother, read: “I wouldnt (sic) fancy the bed next to Gareth Thomas #padlockeda**ehole.”

As reported by Nantwichnews on Saturday, a club statement read: “These comments were made tongue-in-cheek at the time and Lee would like to apologise for this and any offence that this has caused and would also like to stress that he is not homophobic in any way.”

Oxford City sacked Steele last week, when a club spokesman called the comments “seriously contrary to the ethos of the club”.

Steele, who has a wealth of experience with lower league clubs, has until January 23 to reply to the FA charge.

No one at Nantwich Town was available for comment this morning (January 16).

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
